METHODOLOGY

Beyond Design Basis

The design basis of a nuclear power plant defines the set of conditions and events that the plant is explicitly designed and licensed to withstand. Beyond design basis (BDB) events or accidents are those initiating events or accident conditions that are less frequent and/or more severe than the plant’s design basis events and therefore were not fully accounted for in the original design requirements, although they may be analyzed to understand plant capabilities and to plan additional mitigation.
