HAZARD OVERVIEW

Extreme Temperature External Hazards

Extreme temperature events encompass both extreme heat and extreme cold conditions that can challenge nuclear power plants. Extreme heat can degrade the performance of cooling systems, HVAC equipment, and heat exchangers by reducing thermal margins and raising ultimate heat sink temperatures. Extreme cold can cause freezing of instrument lines, intake icing (including frazil ice formation), and impairment of water supply systems.
