External Flooding — Industry Experience
External flooding has produced some of the most consequential events in the history of nuclear power, ranging from the Fukushima Daiichi accident to sustained riverine flooding on the Missouri River. The operating experience record spans a wide range of mechanisms (tsunami, storm surge, riverine overflow, local intense precipitation, dam failure, and ice-induced flooding), each with distinct warning times, durations, and plant-level effects.
