High Winds — Industry Experience

Nuclear power plants have experienced a wide range of high-wind events, from direct tornado strikes and hurricane landfalls to severe thunderstorm straight-line winds. These events have produced loss of offsite power, challenged missile protection of safety-related components, and tested the effectiveness of pre-storm preparation and post-event recovery procedures. The operating experience record documents plant responses and observed outcomes across these event types, organized by wind mechanism, mitigation strategy, and key insights.
